On Saturday, January 9th, Jamie and Deena began fostering two puppies for SAFE. Heather and Pepper are their names and they appear to be terrier and lab mix, possibly a Manchester or Fox Terrier mix. These two pups were terrified of us at first and when introduced to the leash the first time, Pepper was so stressed that he was foaming at the mouth. According to SAFE they were rescued from the Dog Patch with no sign of mom anywhere. Deena and I suspect that they were born in a back yard and as soon as mom started letting them explore, the owner picked them up and dumped them. So basically they have had no interaction with humans and it shows.
Over the weekend and into the new week, we slowly got them use to having humans walking around and touching them. They are still moving away from us and won't come within 10 feet when they are outside, but the distance is getting shorter and they are starting to trust us.
Wednesday, they got fixed and slept most of the rest of that day except to pee and poop and eat. But come Thursday morning it was like nothing had happened. They were also starting to respond to us as humans. They would now wait for us to pick them up out of the playpen where they sleep, and wait for us to put them back in.
Friday Heather was responding to her name by looking at us and would take treats from the hands of my grandchildren. They were also following us from the backyard back to the playpen without fear and waiting to be put in the playpen.
Saturday, they started following us from the playpen to the backyard without looking for a place to pee until they actually got into the back yard. They are also very glad to see us, even though they are still backing up against the playpen instead of coming to our hands.
Monday, January 18, Heather and Pepper have learned to sit for the food bowl, their water bowl and for treats. They are finally coming to our hands for treats without stress. They will even sit when asked with "sit" without any promise of food. They are doing incredibly well with the rest of the pack, follow them everywhere and Heather would rather play with Ruth and Brynda then her brother. Pepper is still very attached to Heather, but will eventually follow her when she's playing with the big dogs. Today Ruth taught Heather how to play tug and Brynda then decided to play tug with Pepper who loved the attention and even tugged a little bit.
Thursday, January 21. Yesterday I had to take Heather to the vet for coughing. So I decided to add some training to the trip. I put her leash on her. She did pretty good !!! When we got back to the house, she walked on the leash all the way from the car to the front door and then into the house. Pepper has learned the 'down" command and Heather is still figuring it out. But they are both very proficient with "sit". There have only been two accidents in the house in the two weeks we've had them. They always cry to be let outside but twice just couldn't hold it long enough.
Saturday, January 30. The last week was really good with the pups. They started exploring the house instead of being constantly in the play pen or outside. Heather loves to play with the big dogs but Pepper is still shy. If Pepper wasn't so shy, he would be getting out of the playpen all the time. Good thing Heather hasn't figured it out yet. They are learning to accept being held in my lap and aren't running away anymore. Perfect time to get them adopted.

This is Ty who is a pointer mix. Ty was very shy of new people and cautious of new dogs. He hated anyone to handle his rear and nearly took my hand off the first time I tried to pet him there. Ty has been coming to class for 3 weeks now and is doing great. He has learned to keep his focus on his handler. He is doing very well walking on a leash. It only takes him a small amount of time now to be comfortable around a new human - especially if that human takes him for a walk. He has no problems greating new dogs - unless they are too reactive for his sensibilities.
In this picture he is trying really hard to get me to give him a treat after I had done some massage and TTouch on his rear end.
This is Sandie a pug mix that is just the cutest thing. Sandie is very reactive to other dogs and shy of new people. This picture was taken on her second day of class and as you can see, she doesn't have a problem being within 3 feet of my Ruth (husky mix). What you don't see is that she is within 5 feet of three other dogs, one of which she was having a reactive fit with just 45 minutes earlier.
Sandy got to meet nose to nose all the dogs on this night and did very well as long as we went slow.
In this picture, we are all watching Buster the Beagle learn how to follow a scent trail. After this picture was taken, all the dogs, including Sandie, learned how to do it.
