Seize The Leash - Group Behavior Training

Attend a class designed for dogs that are difficult in normal group classes, that bark, lunge, become excited, reactive or aggressive towards other dogs or people or just shuts down. This class is designed to make you a more confident handler with the tools to train, control, relax and refocus your dog.

This class is designed to help you desensitize a dog that reacts towards unfamiliar dogs or people. You will learn why your dog reacts adversely, what the triggers are for each reactive behavior, how to reduce reactivity and how to best manage the environment to improve your dog's quality of life. You will learn about brain functions, arousal levels, recovery time, canine communication signals and how to use counter-conditioning and desensitization.

This class is taught in an open sports field with lots of distance between teams. Please be aware that the group behavior class is a highly structured and controlled class that will work strictly on your dog's reaction to other dogs.

The class meets once a week on

Building a Relationship With Your Dog - Behavior Basics
This class will cover improving your dog's ability to focus on you and respond to your commands in a class situation or with other distractions, including being around other dogs. We will engage your dog's natural curiosity, show you have to handle any fear of new objects, people or other dogs and make it safe for your dog to interact with the world around it.

Canine Communication, Energy and Emotion
This class will cover the basics of how to communicate with your dog andhow to get your dog to communicate with you. This class will give you the tools to change your dogs emotions and build his/her confidence in herself and in you. We will introduce play training, a method of teaching your dog everything it needs to know to live in a human world. This class will also cover leash handling techniques, what to do on a walk in response to all those things that can happen and what to do to reduce any adverse reaction for a carefree enjoyable walk. This will also be the basics class for adolescent dogs with little to no issues.

Training For Life
This class defines what a dog is, why a dog does what it does, what is natural for a dog and what isn't. It will cover all those issues that occur at home (barking, biting, chewing, potty problems, crate training and more). We will show you how to set boundaries, enforce the rules without being an ogre or having to learn 100 commands. This class will give you the tools needed to handle any issues that come up in the future. A great class for puppies learning their basics.

and the two Advanced Behavior Clases with a prerequisite of having done all three modules of the behavior classes or by approval after an evaluation.

Creating a Thinking Dog
Sometimes doing the right thing is a little scary at first. Doing the right thing is a reward in itself. Being together still and calm with people or other dogs teaches cohesiveness and about being a small part of something big. Many dog behavior problems are associated with excessive emotional responses by the dog to things in the environment. Dogs are born preprogrammed to exist in a dog world. This class teach a dog how to think, emote and react appropriately in the human world.

Life Without A Leash
Training your dog to walk and act responsibly off-leash is one of the best things you can do for your relationship with your dog. More than a trick to impress your friends and neighbours, off-leash training makes your dog a better citizen, lowers the risk of your dog getting hit by a car and builds your dog’s self-esteem. In this class in addition to learning to live without a leash, you and your dog are shown how to handle a dog's prey drive and how to be comfortable around other species, even when they run.

From RM: This may not seem like much to most, but this is Karli loose leash walking reliably for the 1st time in her 10 years of life. And we haven't even spent much time working on leash manners! It's just the natural outcome of her focus on me -- which she's been learning in Sieze the Leash's behavior class!

REQUIRMENTS

  • Owners must be able to hold on to their dog or come up with a way to anchor the dog for security and safety purposes.
  • Dogs must be licensed and have proof of DHLP combination, Rabies & Bordatella vaccines.
  • If you have a muzzle for your dog, please bring it as not all the dogs in this class are reactive/agressive, some are just overly excitable.
  • Group Policies

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
  • A slip lead, preferably cloth or nylon braided like a rope to protect your hands.
    OR
A 4 to 6 foot leash Nylon, Cloth, or Leather - again braided like a rope - and a nylon, leather or large link chain collar.
Flat leashes and leads can tear the hands to shreds before the dog learns not to pull and lunge.
  • Food Treats ( 2-3 kinds) Soft, moist, SMALL pieces. Something the dog Loves ! Hot Dogs, Chicken, carrots, cheese or very small pieces of dry food. Use the value system.... good, better & best. Use a variety !
  • A Pouch To hold your treats in. Ex.: Nail pouch, apron, fishing vest,
  • A 20 to 40 foot rope/lead.
  • 3x3 Rug as the dog's "place" to be quiet.
  • A box or box lid that the dog can easily get into and sit down
  • 2 Identical tug toys and two identical squeaky/fluffy toys.
  • Enthusiasm !!! A Happy attitude and voice, to motivate your dog. Training should be fun !
  • We may suggest other equipment if needed (i.e. flirt pole, toys the dog likes)

CLASS
* Each class will run as follows :

  • Review - New lesson with demo - class practice - questions - homework
This class will start at: 10am every Friday, 9am every Saturday, 3pm every Saturday and last approx. 50 - 60 min. for a total of 4 weeks.
Location - Ft Lowell Park (Glenn and Craycroft) (map)
Class will start on time, please try to arrive 5 minutes early, and ready to work.

  • Attendance:
4 classes must be attended to graduate. Training a dog is like building a house - each session like every brick, rests on the one before. It is important you attend class, but if you miss a class, please advise us, and follow along in the homework booklet for that week. Sorry – we can not catch you up by phone or during class time. Private “makeup” classes are $40 for ½ hr. Make ups…. in another class, sometimes available. Please, try to finish the entire class, take the time...your dog deserves to learn how to behave well, and it is your obligation as a pet owner !
  • Do not feed your dog several hours before training him at home, or at class. It is a good idea to bring water and a dish, in case your dog gets thirsty at class. If your dog gets sick, do not practice at home, and do not bring him to class, though you should plan to come to class without the dog, to observe the training, so you do not get behind. Remember you are both students.

Just like Kids……All dogs should go to school ! Even “Good Dogs” need to go to school !
